Autour de Marguerite

Autour de Marguerite

A daring swindler

On Thursday afternoon, a young lady of about 25-30 years old, the police have the exact description, went into the jeweller’s shop at Square Marguerite 30 in Brussels, and asked to see several mens watches in gold. She said she had been sent by Mme Quarton, rue des Confédérés 15, who said she was going to give her husband a watch as a gift, that evening.

M. Lenoir was not at the shop because his father had just died. His servant, Marie Giroul, was alone in the shop.

Knowing that Doctor Quarton was a regular client of M. Lenoir, she gave the girl 4 gold watches with a total value of 400 francs.

Only when the unknown young lady had left the shop, did Marie Giroul realise her mistake : she ran to  rue des Confédérés, 15, where she discovered the house was empty. There was nothing to do but tell her story to the police !
